Ebbsfleet United Secures Comeback Draw Against Rochdale in National League
Ebbsfleet United staged a remarkable comeback to earn a 2-2 draw against Rochdale at home in the National League, after initially trailing by two goals. At the break, Rochdale seemed to have a comfortable lead thanks to Connor McBride’s evasive play past a defender and Tarryn Allarakhia‘s curled goal in the 36th minute. McBride then secured his third goal for Rochdale with a clinical finish from Jake Burger’s pass just before half-time.
The hosts, however, began their comeback in the 64th minute when Ben Chapman scored an impressive 45-yard strike. This spectacular goal was described by the midfielder as the best of his career. “I think it’s got to be the best goal I’ve scored,” Chapman said. He explained that the goal came as he noticed the opposing goalkeeper slightly off his line and decided to take the chance.
Just three minutes later, Ebbsfleet’s hopes were further buoyed when Rakish Bingham converted a penalty after Franklin Domi was brought down in the area. This secured a valuable point for the home team, ending their three-game losing streak.
Chapman noted the significant momentum shift following his goal. “We were 2-0 down but we weren’t quite breaking through. Then that goal turned it,” he said, reflecting on how the team started playing more offensively in Rochdale’s half.
The result leaves Ebbsfleet at the bottom of the table, but Chapman expressed confidence in their ability to build on this performance. “The season hasn’t gone where we’ve wanted it to. We need wins but we’re glad to get a point on the board,” he commented.
Looking forward, Ebbsfleet is set to face Maidstone in a high-stakes FA Cup fourth qualifying round derby match, a game Chapman described as “a massive occasion” for both clubs and their fans.
The match was officiated by referee Wayne Cartmel, with assistant referees Michael Hayden and Graham Swanton, and Nick Dunn as the fourth official.
