Edwin Diaz Mets Closer Performance

Flushing, NYEdwin Diaz delivered a stellar performance for the New York Mets Friday night, securing a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field. The ninth-year closer struck out the side in the top of the ninth inning using a mix of his slider and fastball.

The win was clinched with a 99.9 mph four-seam fastball that resulted in a swinging strike for Michael Toglia of the Rockies, who went down in just four pitches. “I’m just trying to throw strikes,” Diaz said. “As soon as I get ahead in the count, I try to go for the strikeout. But the main thing for me right now is just getting after hitters and throwing strike one.”

Diaz has been on a remarkable streak, striking out seven of the last 11 batters he has faced while not allowing a hit since May 5 during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. This streak amounts to 30 consecutive at-bats without a hit, marking the longest active streak in Major League Baseball. Following Friday’s game, he holds a 2.31 ERA.

<p“Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised Diaz’s elite performance, especially considering his comeback from injury last year. “This guy’s elite. What we’re seeing now, attacking, using both pitches, not afraid of challenging hitters, mixing — he’s pretty good,” Mendoza said.

Shortstop Francisco Lindor shared his excitement about Diaz’s recent form, stating, “He looks fantastic. I’m happy for him.”

Diaz attributes his recent success to feeling more like his old self after working through early-season struggles that saw his ERA reach 4.50 across his first 12 appearances. “I feel better. I feel way better,” he said. “As the season is going, my body is feeling really good. My mechanics are locked in right now. I feel great. I feel I can throw the ball whenever I want.”
