Eight-Month Road Closure Begins for Housing Development in Middlesbrough

MIDDLESBROUGH, England — A residential road in Grove Hill is set to close for eight months starting March 31, to accommodate significant road improvement works associated with a new social housing development being constructed in the area.
The Vale will be fully closed to traffic as Esh Construction undertakes enhancements around the Hillside Gardens project, which will provide 296 affordable rented homes by 2028. The council has implemented warnings advising drivers to expect unavoidable delays during this period.
Temporary traffic lights will be installed at the junctions of The Vale and Hollyhurst Avenue, as well as on Keith Road, over the next six months. These traffic lights will be manually controlled to manage traffic flows during peak periods.
“These essential works are part of a major affordable housing development, which is utilising a large brownfield former housing site,” a Middlesbrough Council spokesperson said. “Unfortunately, some delays are inevitable while the surrounding roads are improved and we’re grateful to the public for their patience and understanding.”
In addition to the temporary lights, the road enhancements include complete resurfacing of surrounding roads, upgrades of existing traffic signals, and the addition of a pedestrian crossing at the crossroads of Keith Road, The Vale, and Hollyhurst Avenue.
The Vale will undergo full reconstruction with new street lighting, footpaths, and kerb lines established throughout the site, including Marton Burn Road and Deepdale Avenue. Once construction on Marton Burn Road commences in May, two-way traffic lights will be essential.
As the road works progress, signage will be placed throughout the area to inform road users of potential delays, and Middlesbrough Council has expressed appreciation for public understanding during this time.
