Emma Raducanu made a splash at the Mubadala City DC Open in Washington by beating Elise Mertens in an exciting first-round match. The 21-year-old showcased her determination and skill, winning the match in three sets: 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

Fresh from wrist and ankle surgery, Raducanu is focused on gearing up for the upcoming US Open. She decided to skip the chance to represent Team GB at the Olympic Games, not wanting to transition back to clay courts for Roland Garros right before the hard courts of the US Open.

Raducanu looked strong at the start, winning five consecutive games to easily clinch the first set. However, Mertens came back strong in the second set, cutting down on her errors and making the most of her opportunities to level the match after leading at one point.

In the final set, Raducanu got an early break, but Mertens wouldn’t go down without a fight. Both women faced numerous break points, but it was Raducanu’s mental strength that shone through. She kept telling herself, ‘I’m not leaving. This is not happening. You’re not losing this match,’ and that determination paid off when she finally sealed the win, aided by Mertens’ 11th double fault of the match.

Despite the late finish and the jet lag from her travels, Raducanu expressed pride in her performance. She emphasized the importance of getting through tough first rounds as a way to build momentum in the tournament. With her sights set on the US Open, fans will be eager to see what she accomplishes next.
