English Football League 2023

The English Football League is back in full swing following the international break, with a comprehensive line-up of fixtures scheduled for the weekend. Major attention will be focused on Friday’s Championship clash between Sheffield United and Leeds United, two heavyweights in the division.

Both teams are eager to make a post-break statement. Leeds United, returning to action after Illan Meslier‘s notable error during their previous match at the Stadium of Light, have drawn their last two games. Aiming for victory under the storied lights of Elland Road, the team looks to revitalize its campaign.

Sheffield United approaches the match with an impressive record, having secured victories in five of their last six encounters. Currently tied on points with leaders Sunderland, they have an opportunity to take the top spot, data subtraction notwithstanding. Managed by Chris Wilder, the team boasts an impeccable defensive output, conceding only three goals this season and not since a match against Norwich in late August.

Other important fixtures in League One include Lincoln City, who will host leaders Birmingham City. Lincoln seeks to extend its unbeaten streak to eight matches, aiming to narrow the point gap with Birmingham.

In League Two, the competition becomes fervent, with Port Vale and Doncaster Rovers leading the standings. However, the promotion race is tight, with a mere point separating the six teams trailing closely behind. Gillingham‘s challenging visit to Bradford City and the clash between Walsall and Grimsby Town will be keenly watched, as any of these encounters could alter the league table significantly.

At the lower end, teams battle to avoid languishing in winless sequences. Bromley and Tranmere Rovers will face off at Hayes Lane, while Portsmouth seeks their first victory of the campaign against QPR, after a winless start to their Championship season.

Moreover, Luton Town prepares for a pivotal M1 derby against Watford. Luton, walking a fine line above the relegation zone, aims to offset the challenges of their season with a significant win at Kenilworth Road. Watford, on the other hand, just three points shy of the top two, enters the derby with momentum following a strong comeback in their previous match.

Luton manager Rob Edwards, formerly of Watford, expresses confidence in his team’s potential, seeing the upcoming fixture as a key opportunity to demonstrate competitiveness.

Coverage of these EFL matches can be followed live on the BBC Sport website, beginning with the Leeds United versus Sheffield United match at 19:30 BST on Friday.
