Erling Haaland Signs Record-Breaking Contract with Manchester City Until 2034
MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has signed a groundbreaking new contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2034, the club announced Tuesday. The deal, one of the most lucrative in sports history, extends his previous agreement by seven years and removes any release clauses.
Haaland, 24, joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 for €60 million and has since scored 111 goals in 126 appearances, helping the club secure two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a Champions League trophy, and a Super Cup. His previous contract was set to expire in 2027, but the new nine-and-a-half-year agreement ensures he will remain a cornerstone of the team for the next decade.
“I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club,” Haaland said in a statement. “Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters, and it’s the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.”
City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, emphasized the significance of the deal, stating, “The fact he is signed for so long demonstrates our commitment to him as a player and his love for the club.”
The Norwegian forward’s decision to commit to City long-term dispels speculation about a potential move to Real Madrid, a club he had been frequently linked with. Haaland, who recently became a parent and has settled in Manchester, has emulated his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, by playing for City.
Haaland’s new contract is the longest in Premier League history, surpassing the eight-year deal signed by Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández in 2023. The striker’s prolific goal-scoring rate of 0.96 goals per 90 minutes in the league positions him as a strong contender to challenge Alan Shearer‘s all-time Premier League record of 260 goals. With an average of 20 goals per season over the next decade, Haaland could surpass Shearer’s tally before his contract expires.
The announcement comes during a challenging season for City, who trail league leaders Liverpool by 12 points. Off the field, the club awaits the outcome of a Premier League investigation into 115 alleged financial rule breaches, which could result in significant sanctions.
Haaland’s renewal underscores his importance to City’s future, with the club building its long-term strategy around the prolific striker. His partnership with manager Pep Guardiola, who is contracted until 2027, has been instrumental in City’s recent success. Guardiola and the club’s hierarchy, including chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, have praised Haaland’s impact on and off the pitch.
As City continue to strengthen their squad, with reported interest in defenders Lucas Beraldo and Murilo, Haaland’s extended stay signals the club’s ambition to remain a dominant force in European football for years to come.
