49ers Pin Hopes on Mac Jones as Backup Quarterback

Santa Clara, California — The San Francisco 49ers are banking on backup quarterback Mac Jones as they head into the 2025 NFL season. Jones, who struggled during his previous season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, is now viewed as a key asset behind starting quarterback Brock Purdy.

Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak expressed confidence in Jones during a media session at the 49ers’ rookie minicamp this week. “Going back to college, we obviously studied Mac coming out and thought very highly of him,” Kubiak said. “He’s a strong guy and really smart. He has the traits we like for a starting quarterback.”

Jones, a former Pro Bowl selection, had an inconsistent season in 2024 with the Jaguars. In seven starts, he completed eight touchdown passes but also recorded eight interceptions, leading to a mediocre passer rating of 80.5. Despite these challenges, the 49ers have recognized his potential.

In the offseason, the 49ers signed Jones as part of their efforts to build a strong backup strategy. After losing nine starters, the team opted to depend on younger talent and seasoned backups. Kubiak noted that Jones’s college performances influenced their decision to bring him on board.

“His career has kind of gone up and down,” Kubiak added. “But we saw the same things in Jacksonville that we loved about him as a college prospect, and that really excites us.”

As the 2025 season approaches, the 49ers are focused on ensuring they have reliable options. Kubiak stated, “I think Mac’s capable of being a starter in this league. He’s going to help us if he needs to.” This sentiment signals the team’s commitment to nurturing Jones and potentially reinvigorating his career.
