LeBron James Announces Break from Social Media Amidst Online Criticism
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, has announced a temporary break from social media. This decision comes amidst increasing online criticism and negativity, which James addressed in recent social media posts. On Wednesday, James shared his decision on both X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, platforms where he has amassed significant followings of 52.9 million and 159 million, respectively.
In his announcement, James reposted a message from his long-time manager, Rich Kleiman, who originally posted on X on October 24. Kleiman’s message lamented the current state of sports media, emphasizing the role sports play in bringing people together. “It’s only clickbait when you say it,” Kleiman wrote. “When the platform is so big, you can make the change and allow us all an escape from real life negativity. I for one find it all a waste of breath.” In response, James simply wrote, «Amen!!»
Alongside this repost, James expressed his disillusionment with the negativity he receives online, particularly referencing claims that he lied about watching college games last year. «And with that said I’ll holla at y’all! Getting off social media for the time being. Y’all take care,» he concluded, using emojis including the peace sign and a crown in reference to his «King James» moniker.
James’ decision has sparked a wave of discussion, including supportive comments from former ESPN personality Jemele Hill. Hill responded to James’s decision by critiquing the current state of social media, calling it «largely untenable». «You all are under the twisted belief that subjecting yourself to constant vitriol and engaging with assholes is some kind of badge of honor,» she commented, underscoring the platform’s failure to curb toxic interactions.
In the midst of this social media hiatus, James’s professional life remains robust. His team, the Los Angeles Lakers, has been on a successful run, posting a 10-4 record in the current season. The Lakers are set to face Orlando at home on Thursday as they continue their campaign. At 39, James is the oldest active player in the NBA, having achieved four NBA championships and three Olympic gold medals over his illustrious career.
