Aaditya Thackeray Defeats Milind Deora in Worli Assembly Election
Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidate Aaditya Thackeray defeated Mahayuti‘s Milind Deora in the Worli assembly constituency, securing 63,324 votes. Thackeray emerged victorious by a margin of 8,801 votes in one of Maharashtra‘s crucial constituencies.
The voting for the 288-seat Maharashtra legislative assembly was conducted in a single phase on November 20. The election marked significant political contests across the state, including several key battles in Mumbai’s constituencies.
In addition to Worli, prominent electoral face-offs included Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray candidate Varun Sardesai versus NCP’s Zeeshan Siddique in Bandra East, where Sardesai led by a substantial margin. The Bandra East election held particular importance, given its connection to the Thackeray family residence, Matoshree.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his gratitude to the people of Maharashtra for the «historic mandate» given to the NDA alliance, as the Mahayuti emerged ahead in the majority of seats. «The affection and warmth are unparalleled,» Modi stated, promising that the alliance would steadfastly work towards Maharashtra’s progress.
As vote counting neared its conclusion, BJP candidates Kalidas Kolambkar and Mangal Prabhat Lodha secured wins in Wadala and Malabar Hill, respectively. Despite a tight race initially, Aaditya Thackeray managed to reclaim his lead against Milind Deora in Worli as the counting rounds progressed.
In overall election trends, the Mahayuti alliance, consisting of the BJP, Shinde’s Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, dominated the electoral map, securing leads in over 220 seats. Meanwhile, the MVA comprised the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP factions, maintaining leads in over 50 constituencies.
Maharashtra chief minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde expressed gratitude to voters, attributing the alliance’s victory to work accomplished over the past two and a half years. The election results suggest a continuation of BJP’s political strategy, with discussions on the potential reinstatement of Devendra Fadnavis as chief minister.
Meanwhile, voter turnout in Mumbai and its suburbs varied, with the lowest recorded in Colaba at 44.49% and the highest in Bhandup West at 61.12%.
