AAP Wins 1 Seat in Punjab, But Draws a Blank in Delhi in Lok Sabha Elections 2024
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) celebrated a victory in Punjab with one seat secured, while facing disappointment in Delhi in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. As per the latest data from the Election Commission of India, AAP managed to win a seat in Punjab and was leading in two others, marking a mixed result for the party.
Despite a tough fight in Delhi, AAP failed to secure any seats, continuing their trend of not opening their account in the national capital. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was leading in all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, maintaining a strong position in the region.
Discussing the election results, AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Singh, highlighted the sentiment of the voters who appeared tired of the ruling BJP’s policies. Singh stated that the public had voted against what they perceived as politics driven by «hatred and dictatorship,» indicating a stance against the BJP’s governance.
The Lok Sabha election trends for 2024 initially showed a challenging situation for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in regions like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. However, despite facing losses in some strongholds, the NDA is expected to secure around 290 seats for government formation.
In Punjab, AAP’s performance was noteworthy, with a win in the Sangrur constituency by candidate Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer. The Congress, which previously held a majority of seats, lost ground with AAP’s entry into the fray, shaking up the political landscape in the state.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi emerged victorious in the Jalandhar reserve parliamentary constituency, defeating BJP’s Sushil Rinku by a significant margin. Amar Singh from Congress also secured a win in the Fatehgarh Sahib reserve seat, further diversifying the election outcomes.
The AAP made its presence felt in Punjab with Raj Kumar Chabbewal leading in Hoshiarpur and Malvinder Singh Kang ahead in Anandpur Sahib. The competitive dynamics in Punjab showcased a shift in political alignments, with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also making gains in certain constituencies.
