ABC Releases Trailer for Tim Allen’s New Sitcom ‘Shifting Gears’
The first official trailer for the new ABC sitcom «Shifting Gears» has been released, marking Tim Allen‘s return to television comedy. The multi-camera series features Allen as Matt, a widowed and stubborn owner of a classic car restoration shop. Matt’s life takes an unexpected turn when his estranged daughter Riley, played by Kat Dennings, moves in with her two children. In addition to Allen and Dennings, the cast includes Seann William Scott, Daryl Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis.
The series is scheduled to premiere on January 8, 2025, at 8/7c on ABC, with episodes available to stream on Hulu the following day.
The trailer showcases Allen’s character struggling to balance his old-fashioned values with Riley’s more modern parenting style, creating a comedic dynamic. Kat Dennings, best known for her roles in «2 Broke Girls» and «Dollface,» delivers her unique comedic style alongside Allen, promising a show filled with both laughter and heartfelt moments set in the working-class suburbs of Detroit.
«Shifting Gears» is expected to explore themes of generational conflict and family reconciliation. The storyline follows Matt as he navigates his newfound responsibilities as both a father and a grandfather, after years spent living alone. Riley aims to mend her relationship with her father while managing the challenges of parenting her two teenage children and confronting her own past.
The trailer hints at numerous comedic situations, including Matt engaging in video games with his grandchildren and Riley’s humor-laden attempts at fostering family connections. With its premise, «Shifting Gears» draws parallels to Allen’s previous family-centric television successes.
Supported by a talented cast, the series aims to connect with audiences across generations. ABC is positioning «Shifting Gears» as a potential midseason hit, which could attract viewers from Allen’s established fanbase and those enticed by Dennings’ sharp comedic presence.
