Acadiana Set for Playoff Showdown Against John Curtis Patriots
The John Curtis Patriots, 28-time state champions, find themselves in an unaccustomed underdog role as they prepare to face the Acadiana Wreckin’ Rams in the Division I Select regional playoff. The Patriots, who hold a .500 record with a 5-5 season, enter as the No. 19 seed following a challenging regular season in the District 9-5A Catholic League, which culminated in three straight losses and four league losses overall. However, their spirits were lifted by a recent 21-13 victory over Catholic League rival Brother Martin.
Meanwhile, Acadiana enters the competition in top form, boasting a 9-1 record and a No. 3 seed following a first-round bye. The Rams, led by coach Matt McCullough, have secured a nine-game win streak and feature a highly productive offense spearheaded by quarterback Caden DiBetta, who has excelled both in passing and rushing. With an average of 44.7 points scored in their last seven games, the Rams have proven to be a formidable opponent.
J.T. Curtis, head coach of John Curtis, acknowledged the underdog status but remained hopeful. “If we can play up to our capabilities and not turn the ball over, we’ll have a chance to be in the game.”
The Rams have solid depth with players such as running backs Jonah Gauthier and Tayden Collins, each contributing impressive yardage and touchdowns. Their defense, known as the Terrible Turks, has allowed minimal scoring from opponents in recent games.
Acadiana’s only defeat this season came against Ruston, yet since then, their performance has been dominant. “At the end of the day, everybody is zero and zero when you get in the playoffs,” McCullough noted, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in playoff settings.
For John Curtis, Reggie Johnson leads at quarterback, having stepped into the starting role with significant contributions both in rushing and passing. Their strategy relies on avoiding turnovers and managing field position effectively against Acadiana’s defensive capabilities.
As they prepare for the upcoming game at Bill Dotson Stadium, both teams recognize the stakes. The victor will advance to face the winner between Jesuit and Teurlings Catholic in the state quarterfinals, an opportunity Curtis deems important to step up to the challenge, given Acadiana’s aspirations for the state title.
With both teams bringing unique strengths into the match, they strive for victory and a chance to progress further into the playoffs, sustaining their traditions of excellence on the field.
