As for the medal count, Team USA is currently leading the way, though China is making a strong showing. While it’s unlikely China will surpass the U.S. in total medals, they could snag more gold medals—adding to the tension.
So, who’s on top after the first day of competition? Well, Team USA kicked things off with some impressive performances. On July 27, they won their first medal: a silver for Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard final. The duo has been friends since childhood, and this medal marks a significant milestone for them.
On that same day, China’s first gold medal came in the shooting mixed team air rifle. The competition is heating up!
In swimming, the rivalry between Team USA and Australia took center stage. Jack Alexy, Hunter Armstrong, Caeleb Dressel, and Chris Guiliano clinched the gold for Team USA in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, marking their third consecutive title in this event. The team finished with a time of 3:09.28, edging out Australia, who snagged silver.
However, in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, Australia flipped the script. They set an Olympic record with a time of 3:28.92, taking the gold while Team USA took silver at 3:30.20. The U.S. swimmers on the podium included Simone Manuel, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske.
In individual events, star swimmer Katie Ledecky made headlines by winning her 11th Olympic medal with a bronze in the 400m freestyle, trailing behind Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, who brought home gold with a time of 3:57.49.
In a thrilling display, Gretchen Walsh broke the Olympic record in the women’s 100m butterfly semifinals, clocking a time of 55.38 seconds, just shy of her own world record. Fellow American Torri Huske put on a strong performance as well, setting the second-best semifinal time.
Overall, excitement is building as the Olympics unfold, with many more events and stories still to come!
