ActionSA has strongly denounced the arson attack on the residence of a party branch chairperson in Mdantsane, located in the city of East London.

The Provincial leader of ActionSA, Athol Trollip, expressed relief that Asanele Nkonzo, the targeted chairperson, was not present at the time of the incident which occurred in Ward 11 on Sunday night.

Trollip highlighted Nkonzo’s dedication to advocating for change within the Buffalo City community, which seems to have stirred discontent among the current political establishment.

«This deplorable attack must be viewed as an act of political intolerance, a blatant form of intimidation, and a severe infringement on the constitutional right to freedom of association,» Trollip stated.

He emphasized that, like all South Africans, members of ActionSA possess the right to engage in any political party-related activities without the looming threat to their lives.

Trollip urged the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and law enforcement agencies to approach the incident with the gravity it demands.

Reporting the attack to the IEC Provincial Party Liaison Committee, Trollip asserted, «We believe this incident constitutes violence and intimidation, thereby breaching the Electoral Code of Conduct.»

Addressing the broader context, Trollip referenced the recent turbulent taxi strikes in Mthatha and Dutywa, which not only impede law-abiding citizens from exercising their voting rights but also jeopardize the freedom and integrity of the forthcoming 2024 elections.

ActionSA affirmed its unwavering commitment to denouncing any form of violence and intimidation, pledging to persist in safeguarding the rights and security of its members, supporters, and the general populace in the Eastern Cape.
