Sean Hayes Hospital Visit

Sean Hayes, widely recognized for his role in «Will & Grace,» experienced a worrying health scare when he was admitted to the hospital twice in one night due to a heart condition. The incident unfolded without the knowledge of his husband, Scott Icenogle.

The revelation was made during an episode of the «SmartLess» podcast, which Hayes co-hosts alongside Will Arnett and Jason Bateman. During the podcast, guest Hugh Grant mentioned the difficulties of adjusting to different time zones after a flight from London to Los Angeles, stating, «I can’t do it anymore. I think it’s an age thing. I woke up hours ago very, very hungry and felt like my heart is made of Play-Doh.»

Arnett interjected, drawing a parallel with Hayes’s medical episode, «Hugh, you should know this. Sean woke up two or three nights ago with a heart issue, drove himself to Cedars-Sinai, didn’t wake up his husband. They brought the paddles out. They put him under. They paddled him. He drove home. An hour later he woke up to use the bathroom, drove himself back to Cedars and got paddled again.» Hayes added humorously, «And then we had dinner that night.»

Sean Hayes, aged 54, has been open about his struggle with Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a condition characterized by an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm that can lead to blood clots, stroke, and heart failure. According to the American Heart Association, AFib causes the heart’s upper chambers to beat unpredictably and out of sync with the ventricles, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue.

Hayes has described his frequent emergency room visits, telling «Jimmy Kimmel Live!» in 2021, «I have AFib where your heart beats like that, and you feel like you’re gonna die. So when I go to the ER, I’m like Norm from Cheers. They’re like Sean! Because I’m in there all the time.»

He added that his familiarity with the medical procedures has made him accustomed to his treatment, «I know exactly what needs to be happening,» he explained. «They’re like, ‘Can I check you?’ And I’m like, ‘Look, this is how this is gonna go. You’re gonna give me Propofol, I’m gonna go out, you’re gonna go, ‘Clear,’ and I’m gonna go home.’ Because it zaps you back into regular rhythm.»
