Aegis Space Law has introduced a new online tool, the Space Regulatory Calculator, to aid U.S companies in understanding and complying with intricate space-related regulations. The calculator, launched on June 4, aims to guide early-stage space firms through the regulatory processes of various entities including the Commerce Department, Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Communications Commission, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and State Department.

Bailey Reichelt, partner and co-founder of Aegis Space Law, mentioned that many startups often overlook regulations until later stages, resulting in unexpected delays and expenditures. Reichelt, along with Aegis partner Will Lewis, developed the Space Regulatory Calculator to assist founders in incorporating regulatory compliance into their business strategies from the outset.

Failure to address regulatory requirements early on can lead to costly errors for companies. For instance, selecting a foreign antenna array without considering regulatory implications may impose a significant regulatory burden, impacting schedule and budget. Additionally, Federal Acquisition Regulations may restrict the use of foreign components in certain contracts.

Previously, space companies sought legal counsel to navigate regulatory complexities. However, the high cost of legal advice can be prohibitive for early-stage businesses, leaving them vulnerable to compliance missteps that could jeopardize their operations. Reichelt emphasized the need to reduce legal and regulatory barriers for the space industry to thrive and drive innovation.

The Space Regulatory Calculator enables startups to identify the licenses, permits, timelines, and expenses related to regulatory compliance. For example, a small business planning its inaugural satellite launch would learn that acquiring necessary licenses may require a lead time of at least two years before the launch.

Aegis Space Law, based in Washington, has been instrumental in establishing the nonprofit Association of Commercial Space Professionals and its educational initiatives. The firm remains committed to updating the Space Regulatory Calculator to reflect evolving regulations and provide ongoing support to space entrepreneurs.
