Afghanistan Secures Semi-Final Spot in T20 World Cup After Defeating Bangladesh
Afghanistan has clinched a semi-final spot in the T20 World Cup after defeating Bangladesh in a thrilling match. The match took place at the Arnos Vale Ground in St. Vincent. Winning the toss, Afghanistan chose to bat first.
Bangladesh faced defeat by eight runs, resulting in Afghanistan qualifying for the semi-final. Meanwhile, Australia‘s hopes were pinned on Bangladesh’s victory. Initially, it seemed that Bangladesh might not only disqualify Afghanistan but also eliminate Australia from the competition.
However, with a remarkable comeback by Afghanistan’s bowlers and their ability to take crucial wickets, the game turned in their favor. Afghanistan will now face South Africa in the semi-final on June 27. On the other hand, India is set to clash with England in the second semi-final.
During their first innings, Afghanistan managed to score 115 runs for five wickets in 20 overs. Bangladesh, needing 116 runs to qualify for the semi-final, struggled to chase the target, losing key wickets.
The rain interrupted the match multiple times during Bangladesh’s batting innings. Key players Tanjeed Hasan, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Shakib Al Hasan failed to make an impact. Rashid Khan‘s performance shone as he dismissed Soumya Sarkar, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, and Rishad Hossain.
Liton Das was the saving grace for Bangladesh, scoring his 11th half-century in T20 internationals. A rain break reduced the match by an over, and Bangladesh needed to chase 114 runs in 19 overs, with 80 runs at the loss of seven wickets.
Gulbadin Naib’s dismissal of Tanzim Hasan Sakib led to an exciting finish. Liton Das and Taskin Ahmed were at the crease, with Bangladesh needing 12 runs from the last 12 balls. Newcomer Navin-ul-Haq delivered two vital wickets, leading Afghanistan to victory and securing their spot in the semi-final.
