Senior Congress leader Karti Chidambaram has expressed skepticism over the BJP‘s electoral prospects in Tamil Nadu following the party’s decision to sever ties with the AIADMK. Chidambaram, a Member of Parliament from Sivaganga, asserted that the BJP lacks a significant voter base in the state without the support of the AIADMK.

Chidambaram highlighted that the BJP’s reported 11% vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections may not accurately reflect its actual support. He argued that this figure includes votes for candidates from caste-based parties who contested on the BJP’s symbol, thus inflating the overall vote count.

The Congress MP emphasized that without the backing of these allied parties in future elections, the BJP might struggle to replicate its recent performance. He contended that the BJP’s Hindutva ideology, which he described as North Indian, upper-caste, and vegetarian, does not resonate with the people of Tamil Nadu, who have a distinct cultural and religious identity.

Chidambaram underscored the significance of political alliances in Tamil Nadu, noting the historical strength of the AIADMK’s voter base. He pointed out that the BJP’s decision to part ways with the AIADMK could pose a significant challenge in countering the dominant position of the DMK in the state.

Interestingly, Chidambaram’s observations come in the wake of the BJP’s state president, K Annamalai, opting to dissolve the alliance with the AIADMK. Political analysts have suggested that a united front between the BJP and AIADMK could have potentially altered the electoral landscape, potentially impacting the outcome of future elections in Tamil Nadu.
