Air Canada Flight AC872 Encounters Engine Fire Incident Mid-Air
An Air Canada flight bound for Paris faced a harrowing ordeal shortly after departing from Toronto Pearson International Airport. The Boeing 777 aircraft, operated by Air Canada, was carrying 389 passengers and 13 crew members when it experienced an engine fire mid-air on June 5.
Witnesses captured the alarming incident on video, showcasing flames erupting from one of the jet’s engines as it ascended into the sky. Despite the dramatic visuals, the skilled pilots were able to safely bring the plane back to Toronto Pearson International Airport, averting any injuries or fatalities.
In a detailed statement, Air Canada explained that the engine fire was triggered by a compressor stall, a phenomenon in turbine engines when aerodynamics are disrupted. This disturbance leads to the ignition of fuel further down the engine, resulting in the visible flames observed in the footage.
The flight crew swiftly responded to the malfunction, successfully managing the situation and executing a safe landing back at the airport. Post-landing, the aircraft underwent standard inspections by airport response vehicles before taxiing to the gate autonomously.
