Air Force Pilot Dies in Tragic Accident at Sheppard Air Force Base

An unfortunate incident at Sheppard Air Force Base has left the military community in mourning after John Robertson, an instructor pilot with the 80th Operations Support Squadron, tragically lost his life. The incident involved a T-6A Texan II aircraft during ground operations, where Robertson was unexpectedly ejected, sustaining severe injuries.

Col. Mitchell J. Cok, the acting wing commander, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Robertson’s immense value as an airman and instructor pilot within the 80th Flying Training Wing. The news of Robertson’s passing has deeply affected all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Following the incident, an interim safety board investigation was promptly initiated at Sheppard Air Force Base. Additionally, a full Air Force Safety Investigation Board is anticipated to be operational later this week to delve into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

The timely and heroic efforts of the M1 maintenance team and the security forces, fire department, and medical personnel both on-base and at United Regional Hospital were commended by Col. Cok. Their swift response and care provided crucial support during the critical moments after the accident.
