An Air France passenger plane en route from Paris to Seattle made an emergency landing in the remote Canadian town of Iqaluit, located in the Nunavut territory, after passengers reported a burning smell in the cabin.

The small town of Iqaluit, often referred to as the ‘Arctic Capital,’ is home to a population of less than 8,000 and is not a typical landing destination for international flights.

Shortly after detecting the burning smell, the pilots on the Boeing 787 aircraft initiated an emergency landing in Iqaluit, prompting oxygen mask deployment in the cockpit and cabin.

Business Insider reported that the diversion to Iqaluit occurred approximately six hours into the nine-and-a-half-hour journey, leaving passengers stranded in the isolated Arctic town.

A video of the emergency landing shared on social media platform X quickly went viral, garnering over 500K views and showcasing the skillful maneuver executed by the pilots during the ordeal.

Following the emergency landing, the stranded passengers were transferred to a different aircraft bound for New York, with Flightradar24 data indicating a Boeing 777 originally en route from Montreal to Paris was rerouted to Iqaluit to facilitate the passengers’ onward journey.

Air France expressed regret over the situation, emphasizing the safety of its customers and crew as the top priority and apologizing for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected landing.

The faulty Boeing 787 remains grounded in Iqaluit as investigation teams work to determine the cause of the smoke and burning smell that led to the emergency diversion.
