Alec Baldwin’s Involuntary Manslaughter Case Dismissed: A Hollywood Star’s Emotional Courtroom Journey
Alec Baldwin broke down in tears as a New Mexico judge dismissed the involuntary manslaughter case against him for a fatal shooting on the set of the film Rust.
His lawyers alleged police and prosecutors hid evidence – a batch of bullets – that could have been connected to the shooting.
It is the second time the case against the actor has been dismissed since the October 2021 shooting.
His wife, Hilaria, covered her mouth. Other members of his family cried and smiled.
The evidence came to light on Thursday, when a crime-scene technician told the court that a man named Troy Teske, a retired police officer, had turned over live ammunition that could be related to the case.
After the judge sent the jury home on Friday, the court heard from a series of witnesses about the bullets, including authorities who led the case and Mr Kenney.
Ms Morrissey testified the ammunition had “no evidentiary value” from her perspective.
Alec Baldwin had always maintained his innocence over the death of Halyna Hutchins.
The actor was first charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in 2023 – one requiring proof of underlying negligence, and a second requiring proof there was more than simple negligence, including a firearm enhancement that made the crime punishable by a mandatory five years in prison.
He was then charged again in January this year and the case went to trial, despite motions to dismiss before it began.
In the movie, Baldwin stars as Harland Rust, an outlaw coming out of hiding to rescue his grandson – who has been sentenced to death over an accidental killing.
Ms Hutchins, 42, was considered a rising star in her field, an experienced cinematographer and crew member with previous action film credits who was used to being on location, helping to bring stories to screen.
For Baldwin, the criminal case has been dismissed and he can now start to put the proceedings behind him.
