Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, notorious for spreading misinformation about the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, has made the decision to liquidate his assets in order to begin repaying the hefty $1.5 billion in damages he owes to the families of the victims.

The families of the Sandy Hook victims emerged victorious in their defamation lawsuits against Jones in 2021. However, they have been awaiting compensation since Jones and his media company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2022.

Representing some of the Sandy Hook families, attorney Christopher Mattei expressed that Jones is now on the brink of being held accountable, emphasizing the families’ unwavering determination to ensure justice prevails.

Recently, Jones submitted a request to convert his bankruptcy filing into a liquidation process, following the families’ plea to a bankruptcy judge to liquidate his media empire and Infowars parent company, Free Speech Systems.

Liquidation, although unlikely to cover the entire amount owed to the families, would result in Jones relinquishing ownership of his controversial alt-right platform, Infowars, which served as a platform for disseminating false conspiracy theories over a span of 25 years.

Notably, Jones falsely claimed on Infowars that the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut — which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, including 20 first graders and 6 teachers — was a hoax. Subsequently, the victims’ families endured harassment and torment from Jones’ followers as a consequence of his false claims.

In his recent testimony in a Texas courtroom, Jones acknowledged the irresponsibility of his previous statements about the Sandy Hook massacre and expressed regret for the harm caused.

Following the defamation lawsuits, both Jones and Free Speech Systems sought bankruptcy protection. Jones’ bankruptcy filing indicated assets between $1 million to $10 million and liabilities ranging from $1 billion to $10 billion.

In a related development, Jones attempted to negotiate a settlement with the victims’ families, offering a minimum annual settlement of $5.5 million over a decade, with the possibility of increased payments based on his income. However, the families presented a counterproposal calling for the liquidation of most of Jones’ assets, including those linked to Infowars.

Over the weekend, the victims’ families filed an emergency motion in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston, requesting the liquidation of Free Speech Systems. A decision by the bankruptcy judge on this matter is scheduled for June 14.

During a recent Infowars broadcast, Jones emotionally reflected on the potential loss of his show and company, expressing feelings of frustration and despair as the legal battle continues.

Engaging in a long and challenging legal struggle, the families of the Sandy Hook victims are resolute in their pursuit of accountability and justice in the face of adversity.
