Alex Ovechkin Out for 4-6 Weeks with Fractured Fibula
ARLINGTON, Va. — Alex Ovechkin, the star forward for the Washington Capitals, will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks due to a fractured left fibula, the team announced on Thursday. Ovechkin sustained the injury during a leg-to-leg collision with a Utah Hockey Club forward 5:30 into the third period of Washington’s 6-2 victory on Monday.
The Capitals face their first game without Ovechkin this season against the Colorado Avalanche at Capital One Arena on Thursday. The team initially announced on Tuesday that the 39-year-old left wing would be out on a week-to-week basis, pending further evaluation by the team’s medical staff.
This will mark Ovechkin’s longest absence in his career. Previously, his longest spell out of action was six games due to an upper-body injury back in November 2009. Over his 20 NHL seasons, Ovechkin has missed a total of only 59 games, including 35 due to injury.
«We were sitting there saying like, ‘This is weird. Like, it’s unbelievable that he’s actually hurt,'» Capitals right wing Tom Wilson commented on Wednesday. «It’s one of those things where like, ‘He’s going to miss games?’ It’s new to me. He doesn’t go out there and just coast around. He’s played for 20 years every shift, running over guys and skating. You know, he’s a power forward, the best goal-scorer ever maybe, and he’s a power forward that plays the game really hard. It’s been amazing.»
Ovechkin’s injury halts his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky‘s all-time NHL record of 894 goals. With an NHL-leading 15 goals in his first 18 games of the current season, Ovechkin’s career total stands at 868, placing him 27 goals shy of surpassing Gretzky.
At 39, Ovechkin became the oldest player in NHL history to be the first to reach 15 goals in a season. «He’s not just limping into this record, he was dominating, and he was going for a Rocket (Richard Trophy),» said Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon. «So, it [stinks] he’s out for a few weeks, but hopefully he can get back quicker than they say and keep on chasing it.»
