American Airlines Implements New Boarding Technology
American Airlines has announced the expansion of its new boarding technology aimed at managing passengers eager to board before their designated time. This initiative will be rolled out in over 100 airports nationwide in anticipation of the busy holiday period following favorable trials.
The newly implemented software prevents boarding before passengers’ group numbers are announced. If attempted, it produces an audible alert for gate agents, indicating a breach of boarding protocol. This alert also triggers a message on the staff’s screen to instruct such passengers to wait until their group is called.
However, in situations where passengers are traveling with companions who hold earlier boarding privileges, gate agents can override the alert, allowing boarding to proceed. The boarding system is designed to streamline the process and improve the accuracy of predicting arrival times for connecting flights.
Airports such as Austin-Bergstrom International and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International are among the hubs adopting this system to curb issues like queue-jumping. American Airlines assigns boarding priority based on various criteria, including ticket type and AAdvantage status.
Julie Rath, American Airlines’ Senior Vice President of Airport Operations, commented, “We’ve heard from our customers that the ability to board with their assigned group is important to them because it’s a benefit associated with their AAdvantage status or fare purchase.” She noted that the initial response from both customers and team members has been overwhelmingly positive, exceeding the airline’s expectations. «We are thrilled to leverage this technology to deliver for them ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday,» Rath added.
