Angel Yin Leads CME Group Tour Championship Amidst Intense Competition
The competition heated up at the CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Florida, as Angel Yin secured a two-shot lead on Friday with an impressive performance, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown for the prestigious $4 million prize. Yin began her round on a strong note by sinking a remarkable 30-foot par putt, which set the momentum for her day, followed by an impressive array of putts, culminating in a 3-under 69.
Yin’s consistent play, including a significant birdie putt from about 35 feet on the 11th hole, helped her maintain a lead at 10-under 134. Hye-Jin Choi and Narin An followed closely behind with scores of 68 and 72, respectively, putting them at 8 under.
Meanwhile, Nelly Korda, who has already clinched her first award for player of the year, showcased resilience. After struggling with a round of 72 on Thursday and trailing by eight shots, Korda rebounded with a stellar 66, closing the gap significantly. «Golf is just crazy,» Korda commented, reflecting on the volatility of her performance. She attributed her improvement to adjustments made on the practice range.
Korda, tied for fourth place at 138, shares her spot with formidable competitors like Jeeno Thitikul, Ayaka Furue, Ruoning Yin, and Amy Yang, the defending champion. Furue is also engaged in a tight battle for the Vare Trophy, challenging Haeran Ryu for the lowest scoring average.
Yin’s round was not without its challenges, including a contentious discussion with officials regarding a drop on the par-3 fourth hole. After hitting into the water, Yin had to defend her decision on where she took her drop, ultimately standing by her actions. «I believe my drop was right,» said Yin, asserting that her choice was justified after a review of the footage.
Korda’s round was marked by notable play, including an outstanding 8-iron shot from the rough that rolled into the cup for an eagle on the third hole. «I tried to find a different feel. Felt a little better out there today,» Korda remarked, attributing her bounce-back to tweaks in her swing techniques and some much-needed rest after a hectic week.
Last year, Yin won $1 million in the Aon Risk-Reward Challenge, underscoring the financial impact such victories have on players’ careers. When asked about the potential $4 million win, Yin humorously noted it would mean «even bigger financial freedom.»
