Anne Hathaway Reveals Past Uncomfortable Audition Practices and Modern Chemistry Test for Co-Stars
Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway recently shared unsettling experiences from early in her career, shedding light on uncomfortable audition practices in the entertainment industry. Hathaway disclosed that during the 2000s, she was once asked to kiss multiple potential co-stars for chemistry tests, a practice she now deems as inappropriate.
In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, Hathaway detailed how she was told to interact intimately with multiple actors to gauge chemistry in auditions. Instead of a thoughtful approach, she was faced with a line-up of prospects to kiss, leaving her feeling uneasy and questioning her own feelings about the process.
Despite her discomfort, Hathaway complied with the request back then, fearing the repercussions of being labeled as difficult in an industry where such perceptions could harm one’s career. Reflecting on the time, she acknowledged that the standards for auditions have evolved since then, with a greater emphasis on professionalism and mutual respect.
For her upcoming film ‘The Idea of You,’ where she plays a single mother engaging in a romance with a young pop star akin to Harry Styles, Hathaway spearheaded a different approach for chemistry tests. Potential co-stars were asked to pick a song that resonated with their character, leading to a natural and genuine interaction that facilitated the casting process.
Nicholas Galitzine, ultimately chosen to star alongside Hathaway in the film, selected a track by Alabama Shakes, fronted by Brittany Howard. The music choice sparked an immediate connection during the audition, creating a positive atmosphere that Hathaway, the director Michael Showalter, and others involved found truly captivating.
In her revealing interview, Hathaway also touched upon the shifting attitudes towards sex appeal in Hollywood over the years. At the age of 41, she expressed a newfound confidence in embracing her sexuality onscreen, contrasting it with the male-centric views that once dominated the industry.
With her openness about past experiences and the evolution of onscreen chemistry assessments, Anne Hathaway continues to navigate the entertainment landscape with authenticity and determination.
