Arsenal Signs Spain International Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad
Arsenal Football Club has officially announced the signing of Mikel Merino, the Spain international midfielder, from La Liga side Real Sociedad. The 28-year-old has joined the club on a long-term contract after successful negotiations between the two clubs.
Mikel Merino has been an essential player for Real Sociedad since his arrival in 2018. Over the course of 242 appearances, he scored 27 goals and provided 30 assists, showcasing his central role in the team’s midfield.
Originating from Pamplona, Spain, Merino began his professional career at Osasuna, where he made 67 appearances and netted eight goals. His journey continued as he moved to Borussia Dortmund in July 2016, contributing to the team’s triumph in the German Cup.
During his time in England, Merino was loaned to Newcastle United, where his strong performances led to a permanent transfer just months after his initial season. After one season in Newcastle, he returned to Spain, joining Real Sociedad, where he excelled and played a pivotal role in their 2020 Copa del Rey victory.
Internationally, Merino has made 28 appearances for Spain, playing an integral part in winning the European Under-19 Championship in 2015, the European Under-21 Championship in 2019, and most recently, the Olympic silver medal in 2020. His contributions were significant during Spain’s 2023 UEFA Nations League and Euro 2024 successes.
Arsenal’s Sporting Director, Edu, expressed enthusiasm about the transfer, highlighting Merino’s experience and quality as key assets to strengthen the team’s performance for the upcoming season. Mikel Arteta, the head coach, also praised Merino’s versatility and winning mentality, emphasizing his valuable contributions to both club and international football.
Merino will don the number 23 shirt and begins training with his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre immediately.
