Yaroslav Askarov Warms Up Before Hockey Game

Nashville Predators goaltender Yaroslav Askarov is making headlines as he reportedly asks for a trade. The team’s general manager, Barry Trotz, spoke to The Tennesseean and made it clear that they expect Askarov to show up for training camp in September.

Trotz’s statement comes after NHL Network’s Kevin Weekes shared on X that Askarov has expressed a desire to be traded from the Predators. He also mentioned that Askarov, a promising young talent, would not report to the AHL affiliate, Milwaukee Admirals, if he gets assigned there.

At just 22 years old, Askarov was drafted 11th overall back in 2020 from SKA St. Petersburg. After signing his entry-level contract in 2022, he made his NHL debut last year against the Montreal Canadiens. While he’s played only a handful of games with the Predators, he has had a significant amount of playing time with the Admirals.

Askarov is regarded as one of the top goaltending prospects in the NHL, and many fans had questions about his future after Juuse Saros signed an eight-year extension with the Predators on July 1. Fans wonder if Askarov will be able to shine amidst this long-term commitment to Saros.

If Askarov truly wants out of Nashville, it might be wise for Trotz to consider trading him. Saros is locked in for the long haul, so making the most out of Askarov while he still has value could be the best play for the team.

Before the NHL draft in June, Trotz indicated that he was happy with their goaltending situation, including both Askarov and Saros. He mentioned that the plan was for Askarov to compete in camp and then, if needed, play with Milwaukee.

Trotz summed it up nicely, saying, ‘You’re ready when you’re ready, not when your agent says you’re ready, or when management says you’re ready. Or the fans or media.’”
