The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Sunday that his government is planning to introduce a new law that will impose life imprisonment for cases related to ‘love jihad’. This announcement comes shortly after the government in Uttar Pradesh amended its anti-conversion law, making similar provisions.

Sarma described ‘love jihad’ as a serious issue that involves forced conversions and deceptive romantic relationships. He mentioned that the topic was raised during election campaigns and confirmed that the government would take decisive steps soon.

Alongside this, the Chief Minister also stated that new measures would be put in place regarding land sales. He indicated that the sale of land between Hindus and Muslims would require the approval of the Chief Minister himself. This move has been made to prevent what he termed ‘land jihad’, which he views as a significant threat to the demographics of the state.

The government has already been active in reclaiming encroached land and has plans to protect indigenous people’s rights. Sarma specifically mentioned a new law aimed at ensuring that only local residents can purchase land in key cultural areas such as Barpeta, Majuli, and Batadrava.

In a concerning statement, Sarma noted that a considerable amount of land equivalent to the size of Chandigarh had been freed from encroachment by individuals from a particular community. He emphasized that the government aims to prioritize the rights of the indigenous population.

Additionally, the announcement included a new domicile policy for state government jobs, specifying that applicants must be Assamese-born individuals. Sarma confirmed that upcoming government job opportunities would primarily focus on providing positions for indigenous youth.
