Auburn Triumphs Over Texas A&M in Four-Overtime Thriller
AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn University secured a dramatic victory against No. 15 Texas A&M in a fierce SEC matchup, winning 43-41 in four overtimes on Saturday night. This win delivered a jolt of excitement to Auburn fans following a season filled with challenges and disappointments.
«It’s been that kind of year where you just battle through and you fight through and you keep climbing cliffs,» remarked Hugh Freeze, head coach of the Auburn Tigers. «Our locker room has continued to fight and no matter what people say, they just have chosen to say we’re going to fight to the finish.” The Tigers, with a current season record of 5-6 (2-5 SEC), became the latest unranked team to upset a higher-ranked SEC opponent.
The game concluded in dramatic fashion when Auburn succeeded in a two-point conversion in the fourth overtime. Texas A&M’s attempt to equalize with a trick play in the same overtime ended in failure when a pass intended for the end zone was dropped. This misstep cost the Aggies, who had fought back valiantly from a 21-point deficit in the first half.
Texas A&M, now 8-3 (5-2 SEC), saw its hopes for a smooth path to the SEC championship dashed on a day when several league playoff contenders faced setbacks. Despite the result, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko remains optimistic. «This one’s certainly going to hurt, and we’re obviously extremely disappointed,» he said. «We had ourselves in a really good position. Obviously, with who we play and what we’re playing for, there’s still going to be a lot of energy going into that stadium next week.»
Auburn’s quarterback, Peyton Thorne, delivered a solid performance, passing for 301 yards and throwing two touchdown passes. Running back Jarquez Hunter was instrumental, rushing for 130 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Teammate receivers Newsome Coleman and KeAndre Lambert-Smith combined for 232 receiving yards.
Texas A&M’s offensive attempt was led by quarterback Max Reed, who accumulated 297 passing yards and three touchdowns, also rushing for 66 yards. The Aggies showed resilience by scoring critical points to send the game into overtime after trailing initially.
Auburn sealed the win when Thorne executed a successful two-point play in the fourth overtime, a play Lambert-Smith noted was practiced extensively over the summer.
Next, the Aggies face a crucial match against their rivals, No. 3 Texas, while Auburn will prepare for a highly anticipated clash against No. 7 Alabama.
