The Australian team is making waves at the 2024 Paris Olympics, showing an incredible performance that’s caught everyone’s attention. As of day eight, they’ve already bagged an impressive 12 gold medals, 8 silvers, and 7 bronzes, marking the best start any Australian team has ever had at the Olympics.

This stellar outcome eclipses the previous record held from the 2004 Athens Games. With a few more days to go, the team is on track to break the historical gold medal benchmark of 17, a feat that has only been achieved twice before.

Australia‘s success is largely led by its women athletes, with notable victories from Kaylee McKeown and Jess Fox. If Australia’s female athletes were ranked as a separate nation, they’d be sitting in sixth place on the medal tally, ahead of South Korea.

The swimming events have been particularly fruitful, with seven of the gold medals coming from the swimming team, which has even surpassed the USA in the swimming medal standings for now. This achievement brings back memories of when Australia topped the swimming medal count during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

On day eight, another historic moment occurred when the men’s doubles tennis pair, Matthew Ebden and John Peers, clinched the gold medal, bringing Australia’s total gold medals to 12 for these Games.

Meanwhile, Grae Morris made waves in the men’s windsurfing by earning a silver medal, marking the first time in 32 years an Australian has medalled in this event. Additionally, boxer Charlie Senior guaranteed a medal for himself after a surprising victory in his quarterfinal match.

Australia’s Kaylee McKeown had a thrilling moment as well, as she was eventually awarded a bronze in the women’s 200m individual medley after a competitor from the USA was disqualified for an improper turn.

On the athletics side, running star Joshua Azzopardi finished his heat strong, while the Australian women’s teams in hockey and water polo also secured important wins to keep their medal hopes alive.

Despite some heartbreaks, including missed opportunities in rowing and basketball, the Australian team looks to build on this momentum as the Games continue, with more events lined up on the schedule. The excitement is palpable, and fans all around are cheering as well!
