Australian swimming coach Michael Palfrey will remain at the Paris Olympics despite his recent comments that have stirred up quite a bit of controversy.

Palfrey, during an interview with South Korean media, expressed his hope that South Korea‘s Kim Woo-min would win the men’s 400-metre freestyle, a statement that caught many by surprise given that Australia has two strong contenders in the event, Sam Short and Elijah Winnington.

While the head coach of Australia’s swimming team, Rohan Taylor, acknowledged the inflammatory remarks, he has decided that Palfrey should stay with the team for the remainder of the competition. Taylor stated that the team’s performance and environment were his top priority, especially with the Olympic swim meet just days away.

Before the games, an email from Swimming Australia had asked coaches to sever ties with overseas swimmers, so Palfrey’s remarks raised eyebrows. Anna Meares, the Olympic chef de mission, called Palfrey’s comments a serious error of judgment.

However, Palfrey has apologized to the team and acknowledged his mistake. Taylor noted that Palfrey had spoken to the coaches and athletes about the issue, and they expressed no concerns about his continued presence on the team.

Winnington, one of the Australian swimmers, downplayed the incident, stating he wasn’t bothered by what Palfrey said, emphasizing that their focus remained on competing at their best.

Palfrey is responsible for coaching multiple Australian swimmers, including Zac Incerti, Abbey Connor, and Alex Perkins. He previously mentored Kim Woo-min, who won gold in the 400m freestyle at the world championships held in Qatar earlier this year.

The controversy comes just two days before the opening of the swimming competition in Paris, and it has certainly been a challenging time for the Australian swimming team as they prepare to compete on the world’s biggest stage.
