Australian Players Set to Compete in US Open 2024 Doubles
Wimbledon finalists Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell are among ten Australians ready to take part in the doubles competitions at the US Open 2024.
The men’s and women’s doubles draws have been released, with World No.3 Matt Ebden and his Indian partner Rohan Bopanna being the No.2 seeds in the men’s doubles category. The pair, who were finalists in New York last year and reigning Australian Open champions, will begin their 2024 campaign against Dutch duo Sander Arends and Robin Haase.
Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson, meanwhile, are seeded seventh. The Wimbledon runners-up have achieved an impressive record this season, winning 31 of their 37 matches together. They will face American Marcos Giron and Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round.
Veteran players John Peers from Australia and British player Jamie Murray are joining forces at a Grand Slam for the first time in nine years. The experienced duo reached the finals at Flushing Meadows in their last appearance together in 2015 and recently made a strong start to their reunion by reaching the semifinals of an ATP 250 tournament in Winston-Salem. They will compete against the Swedish pair of Andre Goransson and Dutchman Sam Verbeek in their opening match.
Thanasi Kokkinakis, teaming up with Dutch partner Tallon Griekspoor, will compete against the No.11 seeds, Dutchman Wesley Koolhof and Croatian Nikola Mektic. Additionally, John-Patrick Smith is partnering with German player Andrea Mies, facing Czech Tomas Machac and China’s Zhang Zhizhen, who were Australian Open semifinalists earlier this year and won gold and silver in mixed doubles at the recent Paris Olympics.
Rinky Hijikata completes the list of Australian contenders and will compete alongside his British partner Lloyd Glasspool.
In the women’s doubles competition, World No.10 Ellen Perez leads the Australian lineup. Perez, 28, will partner with American Nicole Melichar-Martinez as the fifth seeds, marking their third consecutive US Open appearance as a team. They aim to improve on their semifinal result in 2022 and will begin their campaign against American wildcards McCartney Kessler and Sabrina Santamaria.
Additionally, Olivia Gadecki will team up with Wu Fang-Hsien from Chinese Taipei, while Ajla Tomljanovic will partner with Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova in the women’s doubles draw.
