Avani Lekhara: Paralympic Gold Medalist
In an inspiring moment for India, Avani Lekhara has made history at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Winning the gold medal in the SH1 standing 10m air rifle event, she became the first and only Indian woman to achieve this incredible feat before turning 20.
Avani’s impressive score of 249.6 points not only earned her the gold but also broke the Paralympic record and matched the world record for her event. Just a few days later, she added a bronze medal to her collection in the 50m 3-position rifle SH1 event, making her the first Indian female athlete to win multiple medals in a single Paralympic Games.
Born on November 8, 2001, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Avani faced a life-changing challenge at just 11 years old when she was involved in a car accident that left her paraplegic. Despite the setback, her father helped her see that sports could bring meaning and joy back into her life.
Initially taking up archery, Avani soon found her true passion in shooting. With sheer talent and determination, she quickly rose through the ranks. Her inspiration? None other than Abhinav Bindra, the first Indian to claim an Olympic gold in an individual event, also in 10m air rifle shooting. With guidance from such an accomplished athlete, Avani’s progress has been nothing short of phenomenal.
She first competed in national championships in 2015 and has since garnered numerous titles and medals both within India and internationally. Now, as she celebrates her victory in Tokyo, her sights are already set on the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, where she aims to add more accolades to her impressive resume.
