A recent incident at Baraboo High School’s graduation ceremony has sparked controversy and discussions about race and civil discourse. The incident involved a parent pushing Superintendent Rainey Briggs, prompting accusations of racism.

The Baraboo Police Department charged the parent with disorderly conduct, leading to a court appearance scheduled for August in the Sauk County Circuit Court. A temporary restraining order against the parent was also filed, with a hearing set for June 14 to address the issue.

State Rep. Francesca Hong, D-Madison, expressed concerns over the incident, calling it a ‘racist attack’ on Superintendent Briggs. Hong highlighted the prevalence of racism in Wisconsin and condemned the parent’s actions during the graduation ceremony.

The incident comes amidst existing controversies within the School District of Baraboo. School board president Vodak has faced criticism for alleged misuse of taxpayer dollars, including salary increases for district administrators. The incident at the graduation did not impact Vodak directly, but it has added to the tensions within the district.

In response to the incident, the Baraboo Board of Education issued a statement condemning threatening or intimidating behaviors within the school community. The Board emphasized the importance of civil discourse and modeling respectful dialogue for students, as they prepare to engage as citizens.

A video from local television station MAX TV captured the incident, showing the parent pushing Superintendent Briggs on stage during the graduation ceremony. The parent’s behavior led to their removal from the venue by school resource officers and off-duty police officers.

As the investigation into the incident continues, the School District of Baraboo School Board reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all staff members. The Board reiterated that such behavior will not be tolerated within the school community.

The incident at Baraboo High School’s graduation serves as a reminder of the need for respectful interactions and discussions, particularly in educational settings where students look to adults for guidance and example.
