Barbra Streisand’s Legendary Manhattan Townhouse Hits the Market for $18 Million
Legendary actress and singer Barbra Streisand‘s iconic Manhattan townhouse, located in the prestigious Upper East Side at 49 East 80th Street, is now up for sale for an eye-watering nearly $18 million.
The stunning Art Deco style property, listed by real estate agent Cathy Franklin of Corcoran, features a total of eight bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and three half baths spread across five stories and a basement. With over 9,000 square feet of interior space and more than 2,000 square feet of outdoor space including multiple terraces, a garden, and a roof garden, this townhouse offers luxurious living on a grand scale.
Constructed in 1930 and designed by the renowned architect Harry Allan Jacobs, the mansion exudes timeless elegance and superior craftsmanship, with each room thoughtfully arranged to optimize space and natural light, according to the listing.
Barbra Streisand acquired the property back in 1970, following her rejection from two cooperative buildings. At the time, she remarked, «This house represents a compromise for me. I’ve never wanted to live in a house. But I’m going ahead with it anyway,» as reported by the New York Times archives.
Despite purchasing the townhouse over five decades ago for $420,000, the current market value now stands at nearly $18 million, equivalent to a substantial increase as per the Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI calculator. The property boasts lavish features including four skylights, six fireplaces, two kitchens, a library, an entertainment room, and a private garage.
In a bid to downsize, the undisclosed seller of this luxurious abode has chosen to part ways with the iconic townhouse, offering a rare opportunity for affluent buyers to own a piece of Barbra Streisand’s former residence.
