Barclays Executives Donate Salary to COVID Charity
Some of the top bosses at Barclays are stepping up to help during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chief executive Jes Staley, chair Nigel Higgins, and group finance director Tushar Morzaria are planning to donate a third of their fixed salary over the next six months.
This generous move is part of Barclays’ COVID-19 Community Aid Package, which aims to support charities aiding businesses and households struggling due to the pandemic.
Barclays is kicking off with an initial £50 million, primarily for the UK, but there’s also a focus on helping people in the US and India. On top of that, the bank is setting aside another £50 million to match any donations made by staff to charities of their choice, as long as those charities assist those affected by the virus.
With everyone pitching in, Barclays hopes to raise as much as £150 million for the community through these charity efforts.
Staley expressed their intention to make a meaningful impact, stating, “We want to do more to back the communities in which we live and work.” He emphasized the importance of supporting those hardest hit by the pandemic.
This initiative comes after Monzo CEO Tom Blomfield recently made headlines for giving up his salary for a year while some staff were furloughed.
