Barry Island Braces for Final Episode of Gavin and Stacey
Barry Island has experienced a significant transformation since the iconic television series Gavin and Stacey premiered in 2007. Now, after 16 years, the impact of the show on the seaside town is evident in various aspects of daily life.
Every corner of Barry Island features something recognizable from the series, including notable locations such as Nessa’s Slots and Marco’s Café. Additionally, the homes of characters Gwen and Bryn are located on Trinity Street, which is a popular spot for fans.
As anticipation builds for the final episode, preparations are underway, including recent activities to clear the property of Glenda Kenyon on Trinity Street to accommodate filming set requirements.
Local business owner Marco Zeraschi of Marco’s Café acknowledged the cultural importance of the show to both the town and his business. He stated, “Every time they come down here, there’s always a boom and when they leave there’s still a boom because when you mention Barry Island people say Gavin and Stacey, which is fantastic we love it’s an ingredient in a recipe.”
Marco expressed mixed emotions regarding the final episode, saying, “It’s a double-edged sword this one I can’t wait to see them all again, but it’s coming to an end.”
Claire Whalley, who owns Barry Island Spirits Co, is celebrating the last episode by launching a new gin dedicated to the series. She remarked, “We love Gavin and Stacey we are huge fans, and we’ve lived on the island for nearly 20 years now- When we found out that the final episode of Gavin and Stacey was coming out, we wanted to do something to commemorate it.”
Claire further mentioned that the gin would toast to the memorable moments from the show, and she proudly noted that Rob Brydon gave his approval after visiting her shop.
John Woods, a fan from Dinas Powys, shared his connection to the series, stating, “I’m from London, I met a Welsh Lady, and the Welsh Lady moved up to London, we lived up there for 8 years and then I moved back down to Wales.”
Local resident Jo Murray concurred, saying, “I’ve lived in London for a long time, and I used to have to explain to people where Barry was, and then since Gavin and Stacey I just say-Oh I’m from Barry.”
Visitor Neil O’Grady from Essex expressed his appreciation for the series, claiming it significantly boosted Barry’s exposure, stating, “I love it-I think it’s put Barry on the map.”
Fans from Birmingham, Olivia Rees and Kelly Underwood, referenced a memorable line from the series, highlighting the show’s influence on their viewership. Another visitor, Kirsty Lily from Hereford, noted that her reason for visiting Barry Island was inspired by her interest in Gavin and Stacey.
