BCCI Announces INR 1 Crore Assistance for Anshuman Gaekwad’s Treatment
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced financial assistance worth INR 1 crore for the treatment of former Indian cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad, who is currently battling blood cancer at a medical facility in London.
BCCI’s decision came in response to heartfelt appeals from former teammates Kapil Dev and Sandip Patil, highlighting the urgent need for support in Gaekwad’s challenging health journey.
Initiating the relief effort, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah directed the release of the funds to aid Gaekwad with immediate effect, showcasing the cricket board’s commitment to standing by its players in times of need.
The severity of Gaekwad’s condition was first brought to light by Sandip Patil, who revealed that the former cricketer’s battle with blood cancer was underway at the King’s College Hospital in London, reinforcing the urgency for financial assistance.
Following Patil’s disclosure, Gaekwad himself expressed the necessity for support, prompting former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar to engage with BCCI Treasurer Ashish Selar in exploring avenues for aid.
Further bolstering the efforts, 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev rallied the support of prominent former cricketers like Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad to collectively extend a helping hand towards Gaekwad’s treatment.
Receiving direct communication from Gaekwad’s family, Jay Shah assured them of the board’s unwavering support during this challenging period, expressing confidence in Gaekwad’s eventual recovery and pledging continued monitoring of his progress.
Anshuman Gaekwad, who represented India in 40 Test matches and 15 ODIs between 1975 and 1987, has been a stalwart figure in Indian cricket both as a player and a coach, making his battle against cancer a poignant reminder of the sport’s enduring camaraderie.
