Ben Shelton Outlasts Denis Shapovalov in Gripping Wimbledon Clash
Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov faced a tough five-set battle against American Ben Shelton in a thrilling third-round matchup at Wimbledon. The match, which had to be completed over two days due to rain interruptions, saw Shapovalov succumb to Shelton’s powerful play in a 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 loss at the iconic All England Club.
Throughout the match, Shapovalov struggled to cope with Shelton’s aggressive game, committing errors and facing the pressure of the American’s dominating serves. Despite showing moments of brilliance, Shapovalov’s 13 double faults and 46 unforced errors proved costly against Shelton’s strong performance.
In an earlier show of dominance, Ben Shelton set a record for the fastest serve in Wimbledon history. Shapovalov had a chance to break this record early on but was unable to capitalize, as Shelton showcased his serving prowess throughout the match, winning 81% of his first-serve points.
The encounter started with both players holding serve until rain interrupted play, leading to a delay. Upon resumption in Court One, the match maintained its intensity, with Shapovalov claiming the first set in a close tiebreak, showcasing his fighting spirit despite facing Shelton’s onslaught.
Shelton, known for his powerful serves topping 140 MPH, took control in the following sets, breaking Shapovalov early and maintaining the lead with his aggressive play. Despite Shapovalov’s efforts to claw back, Shelton’s consistency and big hitting proved too much for the Canadian.
As the match progressed, Shapovalov showed glimpses of a comeback, pushing Shelton to a fifth set. However, any momentum was quickly halted as Shelton surged ahead, closing out the match with five consecutive game wins to secure the victory over Shapovalov.
While Shapovalov’s Wimbledon journey ends, there are still Canadian hopes alive at the tournament. Doubles partners Gabriela Dabrowski and Leylah Annie Fernandez, along with Ena Shibahara, secured victories in their respective matches, keeping the Canadian flag flying high at the prestigious All England Club.
