BHP Continues Support for AFLW, Promoting Gender Equality in Sports and Business
BHP‘s ongoing partnership with the AFLW is poised to make a significant impact this season, as it aims to inspire the next generation of women to excel both in their careers and on the football field. As the 2024 NAB AFLW season commences on 30 August, BHP reaffirms its commitment to enhancing opportunities and equality in both the corporate and sporting arenas.
BHP has been a proud partner of the AFLW since 2019, and BHP President Australia, Geraldine Slattery, expressed enthusiasm about continuing this collaboration. She stated, “We are excited to continue our support of the AFLW this season and create more opportunities for women to thrive in business and sport, and for us to help showcase these talented athletes in Australia.”
At the core of this partnership is a mutual dedication to diversity. BHP and the AFLW share a vision of achieving gender balance and enabling women to flourish in their chosen fields. Ms. Slattery highlighted BHP’s progress in female representation, noting that women now comprise over 37 percent of the organization’s total workforce.
AFLW General Manager, Emma Moore, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We are thrilled to have BHP as an ongoing partner of the NAB AFLW competition—providing leadership and opportunities to help AFLW players to be the best they can be in business and elite sport.”
Since the establishment of AFLW, participation among women and girls in Australian Rules Football has surged by 30 percent nationally. With 18 teams and more than 540 athletes competing, AFLW has become a platform for empowering female participation in sports.
BHP holds the titles of Official Women’s Coaching Partner and Inclusive Community Club Partner, focusing on fostering increased female engagement in the workplace and sports. The partnership supports a range of initiatives, from senior executive programs to grassroots development, facilitating career advancement and female leadership opportunities in the communities where BHP operates.
This collaboration is set to continue through to the end of 2025, reaffirming BHP’s dedication to promoting women’s empowerment in both business and sports.
