Bill Clinton Endorses Kamala Harris at Democratic National Convention
Former President Bill Clinton delivered a passionate endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris during his speech at the Democratic National Convention on August 21, 2024. This marked Clinton’s twelfth consecutive address before a nominating convention.
Clinton began by praising President Joe Biden for his leadership and contributions. He then criticized former President Donald Trump, making a light-hearted comment about their respective ages.
“Let’s cut to the chase: I am too old to gild the lily. Two days ago, I turned 78, the oldest man in my family for generations, and the only point of vanity I want to assert is I’m still younger than Donald Trump,” he said, receiving enthusiastic applause from the audience.
In his remarks, Clinton described the upcoming election as a clear choice between Kamala Harris and Trump, emphasizing that Harris is committed to addressing the needs of the American people. “Kamala Harris will work to solve our problems, seize our opportunities, ease our fears, and make sure that every single American, however they vote, has a chance to chase their dreams,” he added.
Clinton also humorously referenced Harris’s early career, alluding to her first job in fast food, stating, “I’ll be so happy when she actually enters the White House as president because she will break my record as the president who spent the most time at McDonald’s.”
Continuing his critique of Trump, Clinton remarked, “Now, how does Donald Trump use his voice? Mostly to talk about himself.” He pointed out the difference between Trump’s self-centered politics and what he envisions for Harris’s presidency.
Clinton urged the audience to engage with their communities and treat others with respect, regardless of political differences. He concluded by calling for support for Harris, stating, “We need Kamala Harris, the president of joy, to lead us.”
Hillary Clinton, Bill’s wife and former Secretary of State, also addressed the convention earlier in the week, where she received a warm reception from the attendees.
