Billy Bob Thornton Discusses His Role in ‘Landman’
Billy Bob Thornton portrays the character Tommy Norris, a crisis-management specialist in the oil industry, in the new series «Landman» on Paramount+. The series, created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, is based on Wallace’s 2020 «Boomtown» podcast, which explored the effects of the West Texas oil boom.
Thornton’s character is described as a «foul-mouthed Big Oil fixer,» a role that required him to embrace a rugged appearance. Thornton noted, «I look older in ‘Landman’ than I do in real life. Tommy barely combs his hair, never shaves. He’s always a mess with dirt on his hands and face.»
«Landman» is part of the «Sheridan-verse,» which includes popular series such as «Yellowstone» and «Tulsa King.» Thornton, who spends much of his time touring with his band The Boxmasters, contrasts his current quieter life with his days of high-profile relationships, such as his marriage to Angelina Jolie from 2000 to 2003.
Discussing the character’s political implications, Thornton remarked, «If somebody gets on Tommy, he’ll defend how he makes his living. But the show isn’t pro or con; it shows the good, the bad, and the ugly of the oil business.» He further explained, «We’re supposed to look at this as a piece of entertainment.»
Thornton’s interactions with co-star Ali Larter, who plays his ex-wife Angela, brought a humorous behind-the-scenes detail. «Ali was always pulling my pants up on set,» Thornton recalled, emphasizing the low-slung jeans that epitomize Tommy Norris’ West Texas style.
The actor also discussed other aspects of the show, including its satirical take on «tip culture» and the product placement of Michelob Ultra, which his character frequently drinks. Thornton clarified that during filming, he consumed a beverage that was «90% water.»
Thornton’s collaboration with Demi Moore and Jon Hamm adds to the ensemble cast of «Landman.» Reflecting on his past work with Moore, Thornton fondly remembered their time on the set of «Indecent Proposal.»
