The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has caused a stir by naming Karan Bhushan Singh as its candidate for the Kaiserganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh, amidst a cloud of controversy surrounding his father, former MP Brij Bhushan Singh. The younger Singh, a political novice, steps into the electoral arena amid allegations of sexual harassment against his father, who held the seat for three consecutive terms.

Born on December 13, 1990, Karan Bhushan Singh brings a background in national level double trap shooting to his new role in politics. He holds educational qualifications from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University and has pursued further studies in business management in Australia. Karan currently serves as the president of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association, having previously held the position of senior vice president.

Following Karan’s nomination, renowned Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik raised objections, threatening protests as they alleged prior promises from the government. The controversy stems from assurances that neither Brij Bhushan Singh nor any of his relatives or associates would oversee the governance of the sport.

Shifting focus to another crucial constituency, the BJP has also named Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate for Rae Bareli. Singh, who contested in Rai Bareli in the previous election but lost to Sonia Gandhi, now faces a potentially more intense contest with Gandhi’s shift to the Rajya Sabha. The Congress is yet to announce its candidate for Rae Bareli, a constituency steeped in political history with past representatives like Feroze Gandhi and Indira Gandhi.
