BlackRock Condemns Shooting Incident at Trump Rally Involving Former Student in Ad
BlackRock Inc., the world’s largest money manager, issued a statement condemning the shooting incident at a Pennsylvania rally involving Thomas Matthew Crooks, a former student who appeared briefly in an advertisement for the company. Crooks, one of several students in the background of the ad, was unpaid and the ad was filmed at Bethel Park High School where he graduated in 2022.
The company clarified that the ad featuring Crooks was filmed in 2022 and included a teacher, without disclosing the specific content. BlackRock confirmed that the footage from the ad will be provided to authorities and will be removed from circulation following the tragic events at the rally.
Expressing deep concern over the attack that resulted in one fatality and two critical injuries, BlackRock denounced the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump as abhorrent. While acknowledging that Trump escaped serious harm, the company expressed solidarity with all victims of the incident, particularly the individual who lost their life.
BlackRock is set to report its earnings on Monday and has faced scrutiny in the past due to its ownership of shares in gunmakers through index funds. The company’s stance on gun violence has drawn attention following shootings in the US, highlighting the intersection of finance and social responsibility.
The significance of responsible investing and corporate accountability is underscored by incidents like the recent shooting at the Trump rally, emphasizing the broader impact that business decisions can have on societal issues. BlackRock’s position within the financial landscape positions it as a key player in navigating the complexities of investment choices amidst ongoing societal challenges.
