Blinken Warns of Possible Iran-Hezbollah Attack on Israel
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has raised alarms about the possibility of Iran and Hezbollah launching an attack on Israel in the next day or two. This warning comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate following the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
According to unconfirmed reports from Axios, Blinken conveyed to his G7 counterparts during a conference call that both Iran and Hezbollah appear ready to retaliate against Israel. While he did not specify when exactly the attack might occur, he mentioned it could be as soon as this Monday.
The G7, which includes countries like Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, issued a statement expressing deep concern over the growing tensions in the region and urged all parties to exercise restraint.
In response to the situation, the US has bolstered its military presence in the Middle East, claiming the move is defensive in nature. General Michael Kurilla, the head of US Central Command, is expected to meet with Israeli military officials to finalize preparations for a potential attack.
Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has stated that if any attacks are carried out against Israel, the perpetrators will face serious consequences.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas has been going on for nearly ten months and has resulted in frequent confrontations involving Iran and Hezbollah, among other allied groups in the region.
As the situation develops, several countries have begun advising their citizens to leave the area. Japan, Saudi Arabia, and France have joined the growing list of nations urging their citizens to evacuate while there are still commercial flights available, citing the volatile security context.
