Bobrisky Receives Financial Support Post-Incarceration
On August 25, 2024, controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, publicly expressed gratitude to prominent Nigerians for their financial support during his recent legal troubles. Following his conviction for naira abuse, Bobrisky was released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on August 5, 2024, after serving a six-month sentence.
Bobrisky was sentenced by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos after he pleaded guilty to the charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a post on Instagram, he revealed that he received close to 50 million Naira in donations from various individuals in the entertainment industry.
The list of donors includes notable figures such as Afrobeats producer Don Jazzy, who contributed N4 million, and Nigerian football star Victor Osimhen, who donated N3 million. Other supporters included singers Tiwa Savage and Niniola, who sent N2.5 million and N1 million, respectively.
Additionally, Nollywood actors Eniola Ajao (N6 million), Funke Akindele (N2.5 million), Tonto Dikeh (N1 million), Moyo Lawal (N1 million), and Tayo Sobola (N1 million) were among those who extended their support. An unnamed ‘God father’ reportedly contributed N10 million to the fundraising effort.
In total, the donations amounted to N49.3 million, a figure that underscores the significant backing Bobrisky received from his colleagues during a challenging period in his life.
Reflecting on his experiences during his incarceration, Bobrisky likened his time in the correctional facility to a vacation, citing a need for rest amidst his busy lifestyle. He asserted his view that his sentencing was unwarranted, as he expressed an intention to continue the practice of spraying money, albeit limiting it to foreign currency in the future.
