Bolanle Austen-Peters, the renowned Nigerian filmmaker, has added another feather to her cap with the release of the biopic ‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti,’ which is now available for streaming on Prime Video. The film vividly captures the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, an iconic figure in Nigerian history who was the first female pupil at Abeokuta Grammar School and later married Israel Ransome-Kuti.

The story delves into her impactful journey alongside her husband, as they fought against injustice and discrimination, founding the influential Abeokuta Women’s Union. Their efforts faced resistance from traditional and colonial leaders, resulting in a fierce conflict for justice and equality.

The film boasts a stellar cast including industry veterans like Joke Silva and rising stars such as Adunni Ade, Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko, Ibrahim Suleiman, and Iremide Adeoye, who brought these historical characters to life on screen.

According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), ‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’ has raked in over ₦141.5 million at the box office and has clinched prestigious awards, including Best Overall Feature Film and Best Screenplay at the 2023 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) and Best Writing (Movie) at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA).

Bolanle Austen-Peters, known for her dedication to telling the stories of historical figures and cultural icons, is gearing up for another project set to premiere on Netflix. Titled ‘House of Ga’a,’ the upcoming biopic chronicles the life of Bashorun Gaha, a prominent figure in Yoruba history who served as the Bashorun of the Oyo Empire, wielding influence through deceit and voodoo.

‘House of Ga’a’ features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Femi Branch, Mike Afolarin, Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, Ibrahim Chatta, Dele Odule, Bimbo Manuel, Lateef Adedimeji, and Femi Adebayo, alongside Gabriel Afolayan, Jide ‘JBlaze’ Oyegbile, Seun Akindele, Yemi Blaq, Adeniyi Johnson, Muyiwa Ademola, William Benson, Gbenga Titiloye, and Kunle Coker, promising an immersive cinematic experience for viewers.
