Boston College vs. UNC: Clash for Bowl Eligibility and ACC Bragging Rights
On Saturday afternoon, the Boston College Eagles will kick off a two-game homestand to conclude their 2024 regular football season. Currently standing at 5-5, the Eagles require just one win from their final two games to become eligible for a bowl game. Their first opponents are the North Carolina Tar Heels, a team with a history of success against Boston College, having defeated them five times consecutively since 2005. However, two of these victories, from 2008 and 2009, were later vacated.
The encounter will take place at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, with a scheduled kickoff time of 12 PM ET. The game will be broadcast live on the CW, allowing fans to witness the matchup between the 5-5 Eagles and the 6-4 Tar Heels.
North Carolina enters the game as a 2.5-point favorite, aiming to achieve their fourth consecutive victory and secure a third straight seven-win season. This matchup marks the seventh all-time meeting between these two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rivals, with the Tar Heels leading the series 4-2. UNC last lost to Boston College in 2005, making it a pivotal game for both teams.
Insights from «Inside Carolina» experts Greg Barnes and Jason Staples have highlighted key dynamics that may influence the outcome. A focal point of their analysis was UNC head coach Mack Brown‘s reported intention to return in 2025, signaling continuity for the Tar Heels’ program.
In a strategic move, Boston College has opted to bench quarterback Thomas Castellanos in favor of Grayson James. Barnes commented on the recruiting challenges UNC faces, stating, «UNC has a small group to sign, which means the portal will be very important for them. Recruiting has not gone near as well as they had hoped.»
Staples emphasized the NFL experience that Bill O’Brien brings as part of the coaching staff, noting his strategic focus on subtle offensive changes that are difficult to spot but significantly impact opposing defenses.
The analysis also touched on the importance of stopping the run, a common theme in ACC football. Barnes noted, «North Carolina has been phenomenal recently at stopping the run, allowing 3.7 yards per carry, on track to be their best since 2012.»
Defensively, UNC’s approach may change with Grayson James starting as Boston College’s quarterback, potentially leading to different pressure strategies. «When UNC plays against a quarterback who’s not much of a threat to run, that changes the way Collins tends to call a game,» Staples stated.
One player to watch will be Donovan Ezeiruaku of Boston College, whose presence on the defensive line is expected to challenge UNC’s offense. Staples warned, «You better know where he is, and you better provide help.»
Predicting outcomes, Barnes sees a closely fought contest, favoring UNC to win 27-24. Staples also expects a tight game, forecasting a 31-30 victory for the Tar Heels in what could be a «barn burner» of a match.
